Our membership system is managed by Action Network. There is a national “parent” group within Action Network (Extinction Rebellion Aotearoa New Zealand) and we can also create “child” sub-groups for local branches. Anyone who joins a child group is automatically added to the parent group. However, anyone who joins the parent group isn’t automatically added to a child group unless our Action Network team set it up so they are.

Therefore, there are two ways a member of Extinction Rebellion can join a local group:

  1. Signing up to a local group, or
  2. Signing up to the national group and certain criteria are met

Signing up to a local group

An individual will join a local group when they sign up to:

  1. A local group sign-up form in Action Network, OR
  2. Any of the local group’s event of action setup in Action Network.

Note: RSVPing to a facebook event won’t add the individual to our membership system.

Signing up to the national group

The following criteria must be met for an individual to join a local group:

  1. The individual signs up to the national group through an Action Network form (i.e. https://extinctionrebellion.nz/act/join), AND
  2. The individual puts in their correct postcode, AND
  3. A local group exists in their region, AND
  4. The local group has a child group setup in Action Network, AND
  5. A “ladder” exists with criteria to automatically sign new national subscribers up to their sub-group.

A criteria of existing ladders are listed here.
