On 25 October Te Waka Hourua and Extinction Rebellion demanded that Te Papa better represent the true history of Aotearoa.

Two large wall panels display Te Tiriti o Waitangi and The Treaty of Waitangi on the fourth floor of the museum.

“Visitors to Te Papa may not know that they are looking at two different documents: Te Tiriti o Waitangi, which is the internationally recognised version, and the Treaty, the English version.” Says Ratana.

While the important differences in the meaning of these two documents are given a brief mention in the exhibition, the fact that both documents are given identical prominence in Te Papa is misleading.

We want Te Papa to replace the large panel of the English version with an accurate English translation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840.
