Extinction Rebellion Nelson News

October 2019

Hello Rebels!

6 million people attended the global climate strike, 170 000 in NZ and over 2000 in Nelson! This means that NZ and Nelson have over  3.5% of the population which is needed to bring on serious political change.

Monday is the big one!  I can’t wait to see what the International Rebellion will bring! Wellington will be the first of more than 60 cities worldwide to kick off this Global Rebellion.

Keep riding this wave and keep the pressure on – let’s change the world!

The Work that Reconnects Workshop

On Saturday 7 September we had our first workshop,

hopefully there will be more! by Alison McLeash

On Saturday 7th September the Spring sun shone for our much anticipated day of ’TheWork that Reconnects’ event.   23 of us came from Nelson, Motueka, Blenheim and the Wangapeka to gather in Orinoco.

Many thanks go to Debs Martin and Barb Robson for preparing and facilitating a full day of sharing our grief and fears for the future of mother earth.  There were tears, anger, laughter shared with amazing mutual understanding and support.  We talked, listened and empathised.

Thanks also Ronnie for serving us delicious food throughout the day, and to Ross, for building a safer bridge to take us to stand under the old totara trees on the property.

Through these experiences and building on our XR friendships, we are creating a supportive and nurturing community, to prepare us for the times ahead.

Drawing the Line at Fast Fashion

The action went ahead despite the miserable weather and we made sure we were heard and seen! The props were amazing, the facts displayed were hard hitting and to the point. There will definitely be more actions at even more ‘inconvenient’ times – watch this space!

The Giant Puppets really looked dramatic at the Climate Strike. They will make another appearance at the Mask Parade and Carnival, more info about the event here. We will be making more puppets and it takes quite a few people to operate them, so if you’re interested and can help out please join us at our next meeting on Monday 14 October, details here.

Let’s make some noise!!!

Drumming Workshop

The good people from Nelson Drumming Circle joined us at our actions and the drumming really made all the difference.  So we have some keen people wanting to learn and Hazel Twizzel from Nelson Sambassadors has kindly offered to show us how it’s done.  The Workshop will be next weekend, probably Saturday mid morning.  I will confirm all details on Facebook and the website, so if you’re interested please check for more information.  It will be posted as soon as I know!!
