March for Nature

June 8th 1 pm Aotea Sq

Greenpeace, Forest and Bird, Communities Against Fast Track (CAFT), Coromandel Watchdog, WWF-New Zealand, and Kiwis Against Seabed Mining have announced a ‘ March for Nature’ … to protest the Fast-Track Approvals Bill and the coalition government’s War on Nature. See: https://www.marchfornature.nz/?source=greenpeace

You submitted on the Fast Track Bill. You are talking to the Select Committee. But you/we do not trust that this will be enough to stop this War on Nature.

Join friends in the Extinction Rebellion team. Hold a banner, Carry a flag. Be part of the Info table. Be a marshal or first aider. Bring friends. Make this big. Make sure the government hears us.

We didn’t vote for this

This is the new slogan for a new campaign aiming to mobilise people and get real change. We have previously thougt of National and Labour as so similar that there have been calls for a grand coalition! We have decades of inaction over the climate, struggling health and education systems, infrastructure falling apart and increasing in equity. Thisis while we have had decades of signing petitions, writing letters to editors of magazines and papers and members of parliament. We have been on delegations to people who are making decisions that don’t follow the science and address the climate. We have organized into various activist and community groups. Many of these groups are calling for system change.

And now with this coalition government we are going backwards not only on climate issues, but Te Tirit O Waitangi and racism, justice, poverty, health and education. The economy had been stimulated into a further recession with high unemployment.

We have a moment in time to bring about the system change for the shared vision of a just sustainable equitable society.

We are using humour to get people (the 80% concerned about the climate and the one million who did not vote) pointedly laughing and wanting change, then excited to vote for change in the next election.

Right now you are invited to share the cartoon above as widely as you can through social media. And we have a huge number printed for pasting up around your local shopping centre, at local markets, or anywhere that people gather. We need your help to show this government for what it is.

Agit-Prop Theatre Troupe

Part of this campaign is to use humour, which encourages wide participation.

Using mostly White Face mime, with guidance from experienced people you do not need acting experience.

You are invited to join the first workshop 9.30-2.30 May 25, at Friends Centre 113 Mt Eden Rd (go to the back entrance.) Shared lunch. Text Margaret 0224743073

To be followed by a second workshop with visiting theatre facilitator Josia Morgan, from Otautahi (Christchurch).

Council delegations

We are keeping the pressure on our Council which declared a climate emergency in 2019 (would you believe!). We need a person to identify the meetings we should attend, let us know and organize with Council for XR to represent to council.

XR Queenstown has been presenting a state of the climate to Council monthly since 2019. They have kindly allowed XR Tāmakai Makaurau to use their submission – which of course we will modify for the local situation.

Genesis Still Burns Coal

As we move into winter the demand for electricity will increase. Last year with ongoing high rainfall the hydroelectric power generation was sufficient and supplementary power was not required through coal generation. Genesis has not decommissioned the coal fired Huntly power station. So we are ready to act if they choose to fire it up. They have dragged the chain for getting renewable solar and wind power generation to supplement. They have unnecessarily kept the high pollutant coal fired generation as an option.

This action will have a range of activities from banner and flag holders, leafleters, plus more. Email, or text Caril 0211883933

Palestinian Rallies

You are seeing how this campaign is international. It is growing. It is challenging the colonial capitalist system. Not only is war extraordinarily exacerbating the climate crisis, the causes of the climate crisis overlap, are the same. We are providing you with information we shared in January:

There are overt links to the climate crisis. See here for the search for gas off the Palestinian shore https://www.workers.org/2023/11/74864/.

Apart from the horrific humanitarian issues: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/12/5/is-israels-war-on-gaza-also-hurting-the-climate 5 December 2023:… Earlier reports suggest 25,000 tonnes of munitions were dropped on Gaza in the first few weeks of the war. The carbon emissions from this would equate with the annual energy use of approximately 2,300 homes, or the annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from approximately 4,600 passenger vehicles.

Then click on Rights Dispute & compare this text with the map. Note no mention of Gaza in the text, but the map tells a different story.

We urge you to see Al Jazeera for news regarding the war.

And join the protests. We are at every Rally. Look for the highest flag. Adam is using a pole from his truck for the flag. It is easy to find people to welcome you to the rallies.
