OCT 7

Wellington

Help us draw the line.
With rebel camp from October 5-9.

We want a future where all life thrives

We long for all children to have the opportunity to flourish and enjoy the beauty of our planet.

Yet business as usual is pushing us toward mass extinction

Worldwide only 100 companies are responsible for 71% of greenhouse emissions. We are pouring carbon into our climate at record levels. This is despite the UN’s warning that we must act urgently to prevent irreversible damage and human misery from the climate crisis. Without action, one million species may go extinct in the next few years. In New Zealand, two-thirds of our rare ecosystems are under threat of collapse.

Either we make history or we’re history

Our government is too slow to act and continues to back destructive industries. We are inspired by the people of London who chose to make history in April and took mass non-violent civil disobedience. They achieved what facts, petitions and marches on their own hadn’t: the UK declared a climate and ecological emergency.

Draw the line in Wellington on October 7

In October, the London rebellion will spread to capitals across the world. Wellington will be the first to rebel. This is the moment you have been waiting for. It’s time for New Zealand to declare an emergency. Register now.

What you need to know

Saving our future requires a bit of planning, respect, common sense and commitment.

We will host a Rebel Camp from Saturday 5 – Wednesday 9 October. This is during school holidays so all ages can take part. A full programme will be published in September.

Programme

  • Sat 5 – Sun 6: Inspiring speakers, panels and training, including non-violent direct action (NVDA), first aid and regenerative culture.
  • Mon 7: Day of action! Draw the line, rebels, and make history!
  • Tues 8 – Wed 9: De-brief, recovery sessions and celebration! On Tuesday there will be a camp concert headlined by Bruce Bisset & the Rural Voters, a blues/country band from Hawke’s Bay.

Carpool with your local group. Book buses and trains early for discount prices. Avoid flying unless necessary.

The Rebel Camp is in Paekākāriki, near Wellington. There is marae-style accommodation, camping space and a Lodge with bunk beds available (BYO bedding). The cost is $50 in total for accommodation 5-9 October (no matter how many nights you stay).

There are also some billets available in Wellington for those willing to risk arrest, so we can get you to the action day early!

We will be providing vegan meals and snacks (with vegetarian options) at the Rebel Camp. The cost is $50 in total.

We can not guarantee a completely allergen-free environment. Please bring appropriate medication and/or specialised food. There is space to cook your own meals if you prefer.

There will be a safe space for children and parents. We need to support each other to ensure families can take part. Bring games.

The exact location of our action in Wellington will remain secret to ensure we have the biggest impact.

Please respect the kaupapa and family environment at the Rebel Camp and action. We will ask anyone who isn’t respectful to leave immediately.

All participants should attend non-violent direct action (NVDA) training before the action. Talk to your local group about training dates or attend training at the Rebel Camp on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 October.

Making a stand puts us at risk. Safety is a personal and collective responsibility. Be extra careful with what you say, to whom, and how.

We have three levels of participation and all are vital for the action.

Red: Willing to risk arrest, Orange: Protest to the point of arrest, and Green: Provide support without risk of arrest.

It’s your choice.

If we can’t have fun, it’s not our rebellion.

We aren’t aware of anyone being imprisoned for non-violent protests like we are planning.

However, if the police arrest you:

  • In low level situations, you could be let off with a warning or get diversion (no conviction) if it is your first arrest.
  • Courts may need you to come back to Wellington twice. There is a small chance courts would agree to move hearings or use a video link.
  • Protest charges usually involve a fine a low level conviction if convicted.

We can’t guarantee to cover all court costs, but will fundraise if there are any arrests.

Make sure you attend the non-violent direct action (NVDA) training provided by your local XR group or at the Rebel Camp on 5-6 October.

It is easy for disruptive events to be portrayed in the wrong way. Our success relies on a carefully designed plan involving designated and trained media spokespeople with the right message. Help us achieve our goal by sending all media enquiries to the right people.

If you can’t make it, you can donate to support the action! Please donate online. Use this fundraising letter for supporters who can’t attend in person.

The funds may also be used to help anyone who is arrested.

Rebel camp information

The rebel camp will be fun, inspiring and motivating. If you need the nitty-gritty details they are below.
Register for the rebel camp here

All rebels who intend to take part in the major Action on Monday 7 should have completed a Non-Violent Action training session, and all who intend to put themselves at risk of arrest should also complete a second-level NVDA training.

There will be several NVDA sessions on Saturday and Sunday, starting early Saturday afternoon. Because each session will involve approx. 30 people, the sooner you can attend a training, the better.

There will also be trainings for Support roles (for example, first aid and de-escalation), and workshops in regenerative culture each day. A legal briefing will be provided.

On the Tuesday there will be de-escalation/recovery sessions, followed by a camp concert headlined by Bruce Bisset & the Rural Voters, a blues/country band from Hawke’s Bay, to celebrate our success!

Also to note for those who need to bring children along, there will be a supervised “kid’s space”. But given the Action may take parents out of the loop for some considerable time, it is advised that if you can leave children cared-for at home, please do so.

There is a fixed charge of $50 pp for the main period of the camp (ie 4 nights/5 days max), regardless of the number of nights stayed. Any extra nights (such as Friday 4th) will be charged at $20 per person per night.

Meals at camp (vegan with vegetarian options) will be charged at $50 pp total for the duration, regardless of days/nights.

Most accommodation will be by way of camping; bring your own tents, sleeping mats and bedding if you can, but there will be some marae-style sleeping space as well (on first-in first-served basis).

The Lodge accommodation is limited to 30 beds max and these will be prioritised according to need. Note they are bunk-beds, 3-6 to a room – and again, you will need your own bedding.

There is also some billeted accommodation available through Wellington and Wairarapa branch members, which will also be allocated according to need, with core Action status (ie red, orange) and key support roles predominant.

If you require something more private and/or comfortable, you will unfortunately have to make your own arrangements to stay off-site – at least before Sun 6, when some on-site cabins may be available. Please ask for contact detail for these options when you reply.

The Camp officially runs from lunchtime Sat 5 to lunchtime Wed 9. However rebels will be on-site prior, and all accommodation options are available on Friday 4th. Overnight stays on that night will be an additional $20 pp.

Note: If you are arriving early to help with organising etc, please make your additional needs clear.

Communal meals and snacks will be available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. These will be vegan with vegetarian options.

If you prefer to bring in your own food, that’s fine but some koha toward the shared facilities would be appreciated. There are on-site barbecues available but the kitchen facilities will be prioritised for the communal meals, so you may need your own cooking facilities otherwise.

Please indicate in the registration form whether you will be participating in the shared meals, whether or not you are staying at the camp.

Note that additional nights (e.g Friday the 4th) will not be catered.

If you are under-18 and not accompanied by an adult you will need to bring written consent signed by a parent/guardian to be at camp and take part in any non-violent demonstration.

If cost is an impediment to your attendance, please let us know & we will try to assist.

Please ensure you include a phone number for contact as well as your email address on the booking form.

You will receive a confirmation mail in reply, which may ask for clarification if needed.

You may also expect a call to discuss details such as special needs provision, priority for Lodge beds, other accommodation options at camp, and all Billeting arrangements.
