Background

a. Mattermost only lists public channels and private channels you have joined. It doesn’t list a private channel if you aren’t a member of it.

b. Technologically, you can join a private group if any member of that group adds you. However, a local group may agree that only a specific individual(s) can add someone.

Private (listed) and Private (Unlisted)

c. Private channel owners can decide if their channel will be listed “Private (Listed)” or not listed (i.e. confidential) “Private (Unlisted).

d. Working groups / circles will always be listed, except in exceptional circumstances for confidentiality reasons.

Public directory

e. A list of recommended, public and private (listed) channels will be created and maintained.

f. The purpose of including private “listed” channels is to:

i. Make it easy to find private channels,

ii. Ensure transparency, and

iii. Reduce channel duplication.

g. The purpose of a short recommended list is to make it easy to know which channels are the most important to join.

Joining a private (listed) channel

h. Requests to join private (listed) channels will be made in a public channel created for this purpose.

i. Moderators of private channels (listed and unlisted) should join this channel.

7. Feedback

You can provide feedback on this policy to [email protected]

8. Responsibility

a. The Communications Working Group is responsible for overseeing implementation and ensuring compliance with this policy. They can be contacted at [email protected].
