Fast Track Bill

The pressure we put on the government has resulted in significant change to the Fast Track Bill.

The environment is continuing to be sacrificed for ‘progress’. Think gold and coal mines, ocean floor mining. Companies who have had projects rejected through the existing rigorous process have been approach to reapply under the new proposed legislation.

An astonishing 384 projects have been received by the Independent Advisory Group.

The applications are made up of:

  • · Housing and urban development projects: 40 per cent
  • · Infrastructure projects: 24 per cent
  • · Renewable energy projects:18 per cent
  • · Primary industries projects: 8 per cent
  • · Quarrying projects: 5 per cent
  • · Mining projects: 5 per cent

The Environmental Defense Society states ‘Of concern about the democratic process is that in the coming months the Cabinet will consider which of these projects will be listed in Schedule 2 of the Bill. After the Bill is passed into law, projects listed in Part A of Schedule 2 will be able to apply directly to an Expert Panel for final decision. We ask why is the Cabinet so involved with making decisions at this level.’

While XR is delighted that the lack of housing is being addressed, already in Tāmaki Makaurau we have people living in new housing without adequate sewerage – before the fast track legislation is passed!

We need to keep letting the Government get the message that the Fast Track Bill is not acceptable. Greenpeace, Forest and Bird and 350 have petitions. Greenpeace has letters, inviting you to add your name.

Extinction Rebellion has little trust in this usual democratic process. We go direct to the decision makers when they are in town. We ‘welcome‘ them with a clear message: Stop the Fast Track Bill and Planet before profits.

Friday September 13th 10 am Clevedon Community Hall.

We are welcoming Judith Collins Attorney General, Minister of Defence. We will have a little room in one car. There is good public transport.

Sunday September 15th 4 pm Epsom, (venue TBC)

We are welcoming the Prime Minister.

Deliberative Democracy/Citizens Assemblies

What is Matike Mai Aotearoa? Does it hold the hope for constitutional transformation we need?

Matike Mai Aotearoa, the Independent Working Group (the Group) on Constitutional Transformation, was first promoted at a meeting of the Iwi Chairs’ Forum (the Forum) in 2010. The Terms of Reference given to the Working Group were deliberately broad:

“To develop and implement a model for an inclusive Constitution for Aotearoa based on tikanga and kawa, He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Niu Tireni of 1835, Te Tiriti o Waitangi of 1840, and other indigenous human rights instruments which enjoy a wide degree of international recognition”.

Matike Mai Aotearoa have developed a range of working resources, though perhaps the most well-known is He Whakaaro Here Whakaumu Mō Aotearoa, their report on constitutional transformation for Aotearoa, New Zealand.

Writers Group

We are delighted to invite you to join a new group. Meeting via Zoom once a fortnight to encourage and share tips and hints. The group already has several keen members and success at getting letters to the editor in NZ Herald and The listener published. This actively helps people to know they are not alone in their concern about the climate crisis – in fact 80% of us are concerned. But we are not visible. If this is something you can help with Text Jill 02102570468.

The Third Demand of Extinction Rebellion Aotearoa:

KAI MURI O TE AWE MĀPARA

Me hanga, me whai anō Te Kāwanatanga i ngā whakatau a Te Runanga a Iwi, a te kotahitanga o ngā iwi mō te āhuarangi me ngā mōtika o ngā toiora katoa. Kia mau te hira me te oranga ki te tini me te mano puta noa i te ao. (He mea hanga Te Runanga i ngā tāngata korara o tētahi hāpori.)

BEYOND THE VENEER

The Government must assist in the construction and adhere to the decisions reached by citizen assemblies, and the united tribes about the climate and the rights of all life forms. That health, wellbeing and prosperity be secured for the myriad forms of life in the universe. (The citizens’ assembly is established by the residents of a community through sortition.)
