The country’s emissions are rising. Now Co2 is now 415.1ppm. The AR^ from the IPCC gives us a very short time to take effective action to honour the Paris Agreement.

But we are beginning to have an effect!  First the ignore you. Then they laugh at you. Then they get angry. [Ghandhi].
That’s when they start to realise they have to talk with us, negotiate, and that we don’t give up until we win!

XR Protestors, blocking the entrance to Fonterra

Fonterra is beginning to get angry. This is a pic of our Climate Crime Scene tape, which the police kindly returned to us after one very angry employee snatched it away. Stop Urban SUVs

Are you frustrated at the rise of the urban SUV? You are far from alone:

The continued global rise in sales of SUVs pushed their climate-heating emissions to almost 1bn tonnes of carbon dioxide in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency.

Council budget Challenge:

Submissions have closed with a record 28,850 submissions received. Well done everyone who responded to the call for submissions. Additionally there is feedback through other channels such as the People Panel and public meetings.

The submissions will be analysed and summarised by staff and a report given to Councillors. Councillors need to consider the submissions and make decisions of the budget by early to mid-June so the final budget is out by the end of June.  A finalised budget has to be in place before the beginning of the annual year. Councillors can’t be expected to go through all the 10,000+ themselves, so realistically, we have to expect a selection of topics etc. by staff.  That was why I did my best to make our submission stand out and why I said we wish to speak to the submission.  We don’t want our submission to be overlooked. I haven’t heard back from staff about hearings, but will probably get something from them before the beginning of May.

Come to the Council Meeting when Mairi is presenting to show support for the Extinction Rebellion Submission.

Restore Passenger Rail Action commences on Over Shoot Day April 14th

Many of us are joining our friends in RPR: https://restorepassengerrail.nz/ to get urgent action decreasing the high transport emissions in the country. One small step is to make passenger rail an affordable and realistic option for travelling around the country. Hey then we might be able to follow France and ban short haul flights. Also check https://www.facebook.com/restorepassengerrailnz You need to attend a Zoom or in person intro meeting.

The beginning networking & Collaboration report

We desperately need a movement. We have so many groups often working independently. How do we stimulate a movement. There are two initiatives Extinction Rebellion Tamaki Makaurau is involved with:

·       Kirsty as attended a Greenpeace initiated community networking meeting.

·       Margaret is to liaise with the System Change who initiated the public meeting: Beyond the Floods and Rise up against the cuts.

Both these initiatives just may be able to stimulate the much need movement for the urgently needed changes to keep the planet liveable i.e. at 1.5 or less than 2 degrees post industrial temperature increase. (Currently we are on track for 2.4-nearly 3 degrees which will be devastating). This will require necessary system change as they current system has failed. This is why Extinction Rebellion internationally is calling for Citizen’s Assemblies. In Aotearoa/New Zealand we will build on the work of Māori in the document Matike Mai.

Plus:

  • Planning meetings – help make actions happen 1st & 3rd Mondays 6.30pm Zoom meetings
    • Be the minute taker/facilitator
  • Be a Red/Green Rebel
  • Help with designing and making banners and placards
  • Help with the Website/Social media/data bases.
  • Help with press releases.
  • Do a non-violent action training to get ready for disruptive effective action

And much more – think of your strengths and talk to us.
