Public meeting this Wednesday 7 April, 7pm
Aurora Centre, corner Memorial Drive & Greers Rd, at Burnside High School
Hear about nitrogen pollution in Canterbury, and how you can help force ECan to take action.
Local perspectives on environment, law, health, climate change, and more. Not to be missed!
We really need to bring clean freshwater back to Canterbury. Consents for massive pollution discharge from irrigation schemes and intensive agriculture could be rolled-over in non-notified consent processes that lock-in another ten years of damaging pollution. This needs to stop.
In the face of mounting international evidence about the human health impacts of nitrogen in drinking water, we simply cannot continue with business as usual in Canterbury. We can, and must, have clean safe water again. We need ECan to act now.

Calling All Climate SuperGrands!
It’s just over a year since Jeanette Fitzsimons died. A few years ago she stood among the yellow-caped Climate SuperGrands who for hours blocked entry to the Petroleum Summit in Wellington to delegates planning oil and gas exploration.
If she can, you can. YOUR MOKOPUNA NEED YOU.
Grab or make your yellow cape and swirl on down to join Jenny, Tor and others by the Chalice this Friday. Capes are easy to make – get 1 metre of soft yellow material, write a good slogan on the back with BIG black felt-tip, cut rounded edges and pin it together on yourself with a safety pin. Done!
ECan’s long term plan – get your feedback in by this Sunday 11 April
In 2019, in our first fully democratic ECan council election in a decade, Canterbury chose a council representing a strong majority voice for nature and the needs of whenua, awa and people. This was not an urban/rural split but a shift in public opinion around the rohe.
At XRŌ’s last meeting councillors Lan Pham, Craig Pauling & Vicki Southworth outlined the 10-year vision of this new council and asked for feedback on their Long Term Plan. Here’s what we think:
- This is a new council, a new direction and many new proposals that deserve our support.
- They estimate a 25% rates rise (just the ECan component) is needed to make these proposals happen – we fully support this (“Option 1”).
- Here’s a detailed XRŌ submission guide (thank you Michael A!) – please use but make sure you personalise your response too.
We have until midnight Sunday 11 April to send our feedback.
ECan’s plan and feedback form can be found here.
NB This submission is waay simpler than Climate Change Commission, so just jump in and do it now!
