For the second time in a fortnight XR Ōtautahi was back at Rydges hotel on Latimer Square, but this time for the NZ Gas Conference. Our message was that gas is not a transition fuel and only delays the move to renewable energy sources.
Hon Dr Megan Woods (the Minister for Energy and Resources) spoke in the opening ceremony.
Megan Woods came to the School Strike for Climate Action on May 24th in Ōtautahi. She sung the praises of what the government has done to protect our futures in this climate crisis. After that presence, it is frustrating to see the government supporting this conference.
Gas is a fossil fuel. Investing in it going forward is just prolonging a damaging industry and does not give space for clean energy initiatives to come through.
We do not need bandaids on this broken system. We need to completely remake our relationship with energy.
TV radio and newspaper reporters covered the action. See reports on Stuff and RNZ.
