Extinction Rebellion Auckland is transitioning to new secure communication channels for our core rebels.
The first stage of this process is to get the Coordination, Communication and Small Actions Working Group on our new chat app, Mattermost.
We will continue to use facebook and other social media for communication with a general audience and supporters.
The applications we will use are being used by XR Aotearoa New Zealand (XRANZ) and XR groups around the world.
Each app is hosted on private secure servers in Switzerland owned by XRANZ. Switzerland has the best legal protections for servers. Our servers are also carbon neutral. In addition, a number of our apps are encrypted.
There are two key apps we will use:
- Mattermost – a secure chat app for instantaneous communication
- Discourse – a discussion forum
- NextCloud – a secure file server
- Jitsi – encrypted video conferencing
The first phase of the transition is to move our core activists to Mattermost.
- Stage 1: Get the Communications Working Group onboard (complete)
- Stage 2: Get the Small Action Working group onboard
- Stage 3: Get the Coordination Working Group onboard
- Stage 4: Invite other core activists to join
The second phase will include a transition to the other apps once Mattermost is embedded.
Instructions for using these apps, and others, will eventually be available at: https://extinctionrebellion.nz/resources
Kind regards,
Simon Oosterman
