Background

This document summarises the decisions, tasks, volunteers and discussion about the April 16 – 21 Week of Action during the National Digital Hui Jan 2019.

Goal

Creating strategy and tactics for an impactful Week of Action in April 15 – 21.

Summary

Whatever actions happen in the months up to April, they must create enough visibility to make that week really strong.

It wasn’t clear if our action(s) will be designed to bring the general public on board and gain popular support or if we are comfortable about with making the public angry.

It was suggested that actions could escalate during the week, providing people with the opportunity to engage at different levels of risk and responsibility, and working up towards a major event. Actions will be creative and fun.

There was some discussion about whether we should focus all of our efforts on one place and one target, or instead have multiple targets all around the country, so that each local group can do something directly relevant to their own area. There will need to be a clear overall message that ties all the actions together. Actions might be radical in some places and not in others, depending on what best suits the local area/group.

We need to consider how we will keep people engaged and involved afterwards.

Decisions

  • We will wait (a week) to hear back from XR International on their strategy before deciding on any Aotearoa New Zealand National Day of Action during the international week of rebellion. (This is a day for coordinated action and isn’t meant to replace any other actions groups may do.)
  • Our strong preference is an action of Good Friday 19 April (or Saturday 20 April if there are any unforeseen issues with the Friday.)

Tasks

  • Lucy to provide XR international strategy to National Coordinators Working Group by Jan 30

Volunteers

  • Coordinator: (Vacant)
  • Team members: Rowan (Thames), Rosemary (Tauranga), Lucy (Waihi)
