Background

This document summarises the decisions, tasks, volunteers and discussion about this topic during the National Digital Hui Jan 2019.

Goal

Exploring what is important to XR Aotearoa, where we stand, what our key beliefs are.

Summary

It is important that we have XRANZ values and principles agreed upon as soon as possible because of the rapid growth of XR in Aotearoa at local levels and the growth of XRANZ-related Facebook groups.

Also to come out of this session was a clear need for communication and decision making practices to be clarified and written down. People need guidance on how to communicate kindly and respectfully, how to make decisions in local groups, and how to deal with conflict. This is beyond the scope of working out basic values, but is really important.

A revised version of the XR Wellington values was presented, which participants broadly agreed with, but a number of amendments were suggested, including the need to have more explicit tangata whenua inclusiveness. Clarification of the difference between “values” and “principles” was also requested.

Decisions

  • Create a Values and Principles Working Group. The purpose and mandate (on behalf of the hui) are to:
    • Develop draft values and principles by:
    • Engage local groups and members,
    • Facilitate a democratic process with local groups to come to an outcome,
    • Submit a final recommendation prior to the next hui, with enough time for final discussion and debate before the hui, and
    • Present the recommendation at the hui and answer any questions where asked.
  • The recommendation will be discussed, amended (if necessary) and decided on by the hui following a democratic process.

Tasks

  • The Values and Principles Project Working Group will produce a further redraft.
  • Values and Principles group will incorporate wording from the Decolonisation breakout room.
