Background

This document summarises the decisions, tasks, volunteers and discussion about this topic during the National Digital Hui Jan 2019.

Goal

Collating ideas about how to grow XR Aotearoa, especially in the build up to the Week of Action in April.

Summary

A range of ideas were suggested for specific actions. We want XR to be seen as being fun, exciting and welcoming, minimising the hurdles for people who want to get involved. We need to find strategies for reaching out to people outside of online channels.

There was an acknowledgement that there are a lot of other groups around the country, working at national and local levels on topics of overlapping interest to XR. In the first instance it is probably most sensible to focus on the “low hanging fruit” – those groups that are most closely aligned with XR. We also need to reach out to iwi, to ensure tangata whenua is there in its diversity.

We need to create an internal structure where our resources can be shared amongst the local groups, as well as addressing the need to support our members. The importance of identifying volunteers was recognised: getting new people engaged as quickly and effectively as possible, and giving them responsibilities, so the energy is shared.

Most of the discussion was about the strategy between now and April: how to grow enough to have an effective week of action. Separate discussion is required about what will happen post-April.
