Extinction Rebellion’s campaign to encourage people to vote continues! Join us at various venues with Electoral Commission Enrolment forms. Encourage people to enrol there and then! Celebrate those already enrolled. Get laughter and fun and excitement for voting November 7th.
Together we can beat this government’s attempts to make voting more difficult.

Reducing extraction of critical minerals.
Materials scientist Nicola Gaston, a professor of physics at the University of Auckland and director of the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, says New Zealand has several startups demonstrating viable recycling projects for critical minerals, which are the basic elements used in most modern technologies, from batteries & electronics to medical tools. Mint Innovations of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and metal recycler Zethos of Ōtautahi Christchurch have deals to retrieve & refine minerals such as copper & amp; zinc. Such processes are often led by the recovery of gold, to make the recycling of other materials economically viable. “The end goal has to be recycling all of it,” she says. She would like devices to be made more repairable & less resource-heavy. The latter process borrows principles from biology. Rare or problematic materials like lithium can be replaced with more common ones such as aluminium. Extraction “is something that must be phased out in the same way that we have to phase out oil,” Nicola says.

Who is running the New Zealand Government?
With the government’s intervention in the Mike Smith case barely out of the newscycle and an investigation into the matter well underway, another situation has emerged which should raise some eyebrows.
“Advice that government officials tried to redact shows there is “low need for liquefied natural gas.” – RNZ
A low needed LNG gas field is being pushed through by the government, despite the fact that it doesn’t seem like we need one. Simeon Brown is quoted saying, “optimistic assumptions” were made in the reporting, that there is great need for an LNG gas field, and thus the report was redacted. If it was found that there was a low need for an LNG field, why not do some more research, announce the result, disagree with its conclusion and continue to investigate? Surely one of the worst things you could do is redact the parts of the report which don’t support what you want and hope the media and the country don’t become suspicious about the missing pages.
There are three possible conclusions you could draw from this story.
Firstly, that Simeon is correct and we do need an LNG field and the reporting is optimistic. Given Simeon’s work history and expertise, I find it hard to believe he knows more than the researchers paid by parliament to look into this sort of thing.
Secondly, that Simeon is grossly incompetent and immensely arrogant, to the extent where he genuinely believes that he knows better than everyone else.
Thirdly, that the National Government owes someone a big favour. Given that they receive the highest amount of political donations, is this much of a leap to make?

The Government must assist in the construction and adhere to the decisions reached by citizen assemblies, and the united tribes about the climate and the rights of all life forms. That health, wellbeing and prosperity be secured for the myriad forms of life in the universe. (The citizens’ assembly is established by the residents of a community through sortition.)
