Climate Actions in June!

Komitianga Square – voting signups! All month

Extinction Rebellion’s effort to encourage people to vote continues! We set up at Komitianga Square with voting forms. We invite people to enroll. We celebrate when people are already enrolled.

The current government is currently trying to make voting harder for ordinary people (I wonder why.…) upon the most flimsy of rational. So, in response, we are trying to make it easier. Come along. Join us to help get this government out.

March for Peace

End complicity with Trumps Wars

20 June 12md. Aotea Sq

The fight for a safe environment and the fight for world peace are fundamentally linked. It is time for Aotearoa to return to a truly independent foreign policy based on diplomacy, international law, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Let our country be a brave voice of reason in the world once again.

March with your XR Fellow Rebels. Bring your placards. Get dressed up. Costumes are loved by XR. Be your favorite endangered creature.

Changes to the Climate Change Response Act – 2002

This story should be categorized under climate news, however, because of the gravity of this change and its possible impacts on New Zealanders and our society it is getting its own write up.

2019 – Mike Smith takes to the supreme court a case arguing that Fonterra, Genesis, Dairy Holdings, New Zealand Steel, Z Energy and BT Mining have a duty of care to reduce their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. The supreme court found in 2024 that this case – “had enough of a basis that it should be heard in trial.

April 2026 – The Luxon Government announces changes to the Climate Change Response Act making it illegal for individuals to sue a company for climate damage. The case is therefore thrown out.

May 2026 – A briefing note is disclosed to the media showing the above mentioned companies wrote to the government about Smith’s case. The note explains, “why legislative intervention “is necessary and appropriate.” Then the government went and changed the law.

My question is this:

Should any company be able to lobby a government directly and achieve access to decision making in our system of government?

Does the rationale of “uncertainty for business’’ wash with you? Luxon stated – “What you don’t want – and none of us wanted – would be a precedent where there’s duplicating or a parallel system establishing massive amounts of uncertainty for businesses in New Zealand…” Perhaps what we don’t want is a government which can be lobbied by companies to avoid being held accountable for climate damage? Where is the certainty for New Zealanders that what we want will not be superseded to achieve ‘business confidence’?

Extinction Rebellion’s Third Demand:

The democracy our forebears fought for is no longer serving us well. We need systemic change.

Me hanga, me whai anō Te Kāwanatanga i ngā whakatau a Te Runanga a Iwi, a te kotahitanga o ngā iwi mō te āhuarangi me ngā mōtika o ngā toiora katoa. Kia mau te hira me te oranga ki te tini me te mano puta noa i te ao. (He mea hanga Te Runanga i ngā tāngata korara o tētahi hāpori.)

The Government must assist in the construction and adhere to the decisions reached by citizen assemblies, and the united tribes about the climate and the rights of all life forms. That health, wellbeing and prosperity be secured for the myriad forms of life in the universe. (The citizens’ assembly is established by the residents of a community through sortition.)
