ECan’s Long-Term Plan – hear Lan Pham and other councillors
Friday 26 March at 6:00pm – 8:00pm, WEA, 59 Gloucester St
Come hear Lan Pham, Vicki Southworth, Craig Pauling and other councillors explain the plan, and give them your feedback on what is important to you.
The Plan was provisionally approved by ECan, along with a pretty substantial rate rise. So it’s especially important that ECan hears from climate and environmental action groups like XR, Forest and Bird etc. As a council they are proposing some positive programmes to begin to address our climate and ecological emergency at a regional level. But they are likely to get huge pushback due to the cost to do so (…never mind the cost of NOT acting!!)
If you can, please take a look at the plan before you come – it’s here. The Facebook event.
NB This meeting replaces XR Ōtautahi’s usual Heartbeat session on this 4th Friday of the month. Back to usual Heartbeat at 7pm on 9 April.
Nitrates In The Water
Can you help? XR Ōtautahi has a job for someone with analysis skills and curiosity about local government. We want to find and collate the number and type of resource consents for water usage – water takes and discharge of nutrients to water. ECan provides much of this info on its public website. Contact Torfrida 021 107 3937 [email protected] if you’d like to help.
April 9th Intergenerational Climate Strike
Friday 9 April at noon, location TBD
Ōtautahi and all around Aotearoa!
School Strike 4 Climate NZ and SS4C NZ Community are organising this!
See Facebook event for updates on venue etc.
SS4C say:
“Kia ora whānau, you heard it right, book it in your calendar! It is time to stand up once again, and take to the streets. On 9 April we are asking that you take your demands, your placards and your aroha to the streets to demand climate justice and action!
As climate change is affecting every New Zealander and every part of society, they are inviting everyone to join them: this Strike 4 Climate must be intergenerational. Parents, Teachers, Aunties, Uncles and Grandparents are asked to join youth on April the 9th to stand up for climate justice. The time to act is NOW! This will be the fourth intergenerational climate strike in the history of Aotearoa.
This strike will be coordinated on a regional level, so head to our website https://www.
As Aotearoa we are in an incredibly unique and privileged position compared to other nations, we must use this to our advantage. It is okay to be scared of the unknown, we all are, but it isn’t okay to sit back and do nothing – now is the time to demand action. Let’s take grip of the current position we hold and direct the same kiwi can-do attitude we used during lockdown towards this climate crisis. Let’s bring back the team of 5 million and get the job done.
Ka Kite,
SS4C NZ ”
Deep Ecology/Regenerative Retreat
Tues – Thurs, 16 – 18 April, Quarantine Island / Kamau Taurua, Otago
Wehea Taitea Kia Tū, Ko Te Iho.
Strip away the sapwood to expose the heart wood.
Kia ora! We are hosting a Deep Ecology/Regenerative Retreat for people who are protecting and healing our planet. The beautiful Kamau Tauru (Quarantine Island) is being offered as a koha for us in acknowledgment of this mahi.
Location – Kamau Tauru lies within the takiwā of Te Rūnaka o Ōtākou and their mana whenua is recognised. The island is a significant place for them on Te Wai Ōtākou. Kamau Tauru is, the name of an ancestral canoe, and also has a literal meaning of ‘a place where nets are set.
After the closure of the island as a quarantine station in the 1940s, it was developed in the 1950s by a community that was committed to social justice, environmental protection and spiritual growth. The current island kaitiaki, Megan Hughes says, “The community today looks a bit different, but we are still deeply aligned to these values and we believe that as climate activists, you have committed to work that we not only support, but want to show our gratitude for”. To learn more about the island and volunteer in the future, click here: http://quarantineisland.org.
Vision
Deep ecology aims to heal our relationship with Papatūānuku by encouraging us to look beyond the quick fixes; to heal ourselves, our communities and our society as a whole and to harmonise with natural rhythms, and appreciate that we are nature.
Our aims are to:
- Practice The Work that Reconnects
- Build trust and deepen connections with each other
- Be present with our feelings, be vulnerable, including any climate grief, in a safe and supportive environment
- Empower those who want to facilitate their own workshop, especially for their first time
- Contextualise the retreat in decolonisation and re-indigenisation/honouring rangatiratanga, building on the workshop hosted by XR Ōtepoti the weekend prior
- Experience The Work that Reconnects cycle: Coming from gratitude. Honouring our pain for the world. Seeing with new/ancient eyes. Going forth
Cost
The cost of the retreat will be a sliding scale of approximately $50 – $100 for food, travel, and admin. Our costs are recorded at this link.
COVID
This retreat will go ahead under Level 1 or 2. Under Level 3 or 4, we will postpone this event and full refunds will be made.
Process
The process of organising the retreat is ever evolving. It sprouted from word of mouth, and we’d love anyone who wants to be involved in any capacity to get in touch!
